CEO Weekly update 14/10/18

Dear All,

It has been lovely to receive so many updates celebrating pupils’ learning and success supported by the skill, time and commitment of staff, parents and governors across our Trust this week.

I am delighted to share that St Saviour’s Junior Church School has been awarded the OPAL Platinum Award after their formal ‘Outdoor Play And Learning (OPAL)’ assessment. .

Thank you to all staff who have worked towards this achievement.  Thank you also to families who have attended OPAL play sessions and shown such enthusiasm for the school’s OPAL journey:  https://st-saviours-junior-church-school.secure-primarysite.net/news/detail/opal-platinum-award-makes-the-press/

Children at Bathwick St. Mary Church School now enjoy weekly ‘OWL (Outdoor Woodland Learning) Adventure’ days. The beautiful woodland area where OWL adventures happen is part of the school grounds that, until recently, had not been accessible to children.   Head teacher, Kevin Purkiss, supported by enthusiastic staff, governors and a very active, supportive group of parents, opened the area in January.

As the wonderful photographs below show, OWL learning has become a highly valued part of the creative, rich curriculum at Bathwick St. Mary.

Children at Oakhill Church School have taken part in a school-wide art project, adding  colour, inspiration and identity to classrooms. Pupils were challenged to create art work that embodies Oakhill’s values. Glow Worms Class brought in bottle tops and chose to design an eye, a tree, a butterfly, a flower and a lizard. Their bright, engaging artwork is proudly displayed in their classroom.

Bathampton School participated in the Schools’ Modern Biathlon Regional Qualifying Competition at Bath University on 5th October.  Children enjoyed taking part and an exceptional performance resulted in one pupil achieving a medal.  A number of Bathampton pupils are likely to qualify for the National Schools’ Biathlon, to be held at Crystal Palace in March 2019.

At Holy Trinity Church School, Year 3 have been learning about The Stone Age. Pupils made their own Stone Age necklaces from clay having given careful consideration to which 3D shapes they would include in their designs.

Since September 2017, Freshford School pupils have been participating in ‘Energy Sparks’, an exciting project about how to make learning environments more energy efficient. Energy Sparks’ website produces charts from schools’ Smart Meters showing gas and electricity usage data for pupils, staff and parents to analyse. Over the last year, the monitoring of lights and appliances left on when classrooms were empty encouraged pupils and staff to turn these off.  Classroom temperatures were logged and radiators set at around 18C. Information and updates were shared in assembly. As a result, there has been an impressive 30% saving of energy across the school.

It was wonderful to meet our NQTs who attended their first development day this week. We began the year by thinking about the values of our trust and why these are so important in supporting pupils learning and development.

At Court de Wyck Church School, pupils from Kestrel and Heron Classes made poppies and crosses that have been creatively displayed by Mrs Baber on a beautiful Poppy Board. It will be on display in Wells Cathedral, alongside boards from all schools in our Trust, until mid-November.

Thank you all – leaders, teachers, staff, parents and governors – for  working together to nurture and promote the on-going development of learning in our schools and across our Trust.  It is your skill, time and commitment that enables our schools to provide high quality environments with opportunities for every pupil to learn, thrive and grow with enjoyment, creativity and a sense of wonder.

Kind regards

Philip
